Balancing Rights and Responsibilities

We have rights. Others have the same rights. None of us has the right to harm others or to do things that could potentially cause harm, however.

We have responsibilities, to ourselves and to others. We have the responsibility to keep ourselves safe. We also have the responsibility to do what we can to keep others safe.

For example, we have the right to drive a motor vehicle (provided we have a valid license). We have the right to drink alcohol (provided we are of age). We do not have the right to drive drunk. We have the responsibility of not endangering ourselves or others while driving.

We need to balance these rights and responsibilities. I think that is especially important now with the COVID-19 pandemic. We are all in this together.

When there are essential workers risking their lives to do their jobs for us, is social/physical distancing really such a sacrifice? Can’t we do that little bit to help our communities, our country, and our world, never mind ourselves?

For those of you who are balancing rights and responsibilities, thank you! You are making a bigger difference than you can ever know.
