Pain and Gain

2020 was a tough year, wasn’t it? We had a pandemic; unlike anything the world has seen for a century. It changed every aspect of our lives. It brought to the forefront the very real health care disparities in this country. We were also forcibly reminded in 2020 that social injustice still persists. And then there was all the politics. And the conspiracy theories. And all the other craziness that made the year extremely stressful and difficult.

And I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that as stressful as it has been for me, there are those who have had it far, far, worse.

I would like to share something that helped me navigate through 2020. I think I’m going to need it again for 2021. And it might help you as well.

Perhaps you have heard of how we can choose short-term gain for long-term pain or short-term pain for long-term gain. I try to choose long-term gain. The short-term pain might really hurt, but I’d rather go through it, get it over with, and then enjoy the long-term gain.

Whenever I felt overwhelmed with what was happening in 2020, I’d tell myself that maybe our country, and our world, needed this to become better. That maybe we will all be in a better place afterwards.

I really hope that all the pain we have gone through, and continue to go through, will end up being, relatively speaking, short-term. I hope that it will lead to long-term gain. I hope that we can fix, or at least start fixing, some of the major problems that exist in our country, and our world. The possibility is there, if we take action.

I think what we all need in difficult times is hope. This thought gives me hope. I’m sharing it in case it might give you hope as well.
